Jim Blashfield

I have worked as Jim Blashfield’s computer graphics generalist since 2000. What he visions, I build. Jim creates public artworks that combine filmmaking with sculptural components to create unique, site specific moving image presentations. Using vivid, dreamlike imagery, his artworks are often visual ruminations-- varying from the concrete to the abstract-- on the nature and function of the environment the artwork inhabits. In Jim’s case, part of production usually entails gathering elements from lots of different sources including objects or textures that he’s photographed, 2d and 3d computer graphics, green screened moving images, and even stock photography.  My job is to composite, animate these disparate elements into a living, cohesive scene, in accord with Jim's design and direction.  None of the work I’ve done with Jim fits neatly into a single square frame. For example, once we made a four-block-long movie for the city of Las Vegas. Most recently we designed, built, and created imagery for a 12-foot-high 11 screen video sculpture in Seattle. The movies here will help give you a further sense of our work.
